Course Description: Active Isolated Stretching & Strengthening: The Mattes Method
“Active Isolated Stretching: The Mattes Method” centers on physiological principles of specific muscle lengthening, increased circulation & oxygen to the tissues, together with lengthening of the superficial & deep fascia.
Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) is one of the methods of stretching most used by today’s athletes, massage therapists, personal/athletic trainers & professionals. Active Isolated Stretching allows the body to repair itself & also to prepare for daily activity. The Active Isolated Stretching technique involves the method of holding each stretch for less than two seconds. This method of stretching is also known to work with the body’s natural physiological makeup to improve circulation & increase the elasticity of muscles, joints & fascia. There are several ways of learning about Active Isolated Stretching (AIS).
AIS is an outstanding modality to improve posture, eliminating abnormal curvatures such as scoliosis & kyphosis, restoring body alignment & helping eliminate pain. AIS has long proven to be effective in treating difficult conditions including autoimmune problems such as fibromyalgia, scleroderma & lupus. Neurological diagnosis including incomplete Spinal Cord, Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Post Polio, Parkinson’s & Cerebral Vascular Accident (stroke). Conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, neck & back pain, shoulder conditions such as adhesive capsulitis & rotator cuff, foot & ankle conditions of all nature plus knee & hip conditions.
An Active Isolated Stretching session will reveal muscular imbalances that you need to correct if the improvements are to last. The Aaron Mattes Method of strength training is highly specific. While it is holistic & treats the body as a unit, its primary characteristic is its capability to break down the body to treat isolated parts. There are protocols for every primary muscle of the body. The Mattes Method of Active Isolated Strengthening follows the training specificity principle (to become better at a particular exercise or skill, you must repetitively perform that exercise or skill) by identifying & resolving specific strength & functional deficits. The Mattes Method then employs full range of motion movements to contract & strengthen targeted muscles, while at the same time stretching the opposing muscles. The result is increased muscle strength, balance across joints, flexibility & coordination, plus improved posture & a reduced chance of injury.
The course is split into 2 days of upper body stretching & strengthening and 2 days of lower body stretching & strengthening. The course content is lecture (25%) & hands on (75%), concentrating on Active Isolated Stretching & Strengthening work. The Mattes Method is compatible with physical therapy, chiropractic medicine, osteopathic medicine, athletic training, personal training, energy work & all types of massage modalities & techniques.
